A New Poem (Let's Explore That!)

Image
Madonna by Fionn Baker Mary, the mother of god’s other name Asshole who only cares about cheap fame
The disco, dance, rock music that she can do all. Or the screen in her pungent Michigan drawl, apart from Feb Fifteen’s award show’s big fall
. No one is like her
 No one will beat her
Apart from Lady Gaga, her beats now way more heard.     ⚛》》》》》◆《《《《《⚛ This is an acrostic poem in free verse but a loose 9-12 syllable structure that I completed as a task for Laura.  I decided to write a humorous piece that reflects on the career of Pop singer Madonna, since she is one of my biggest inspirations as a musician and a writer. Her larger than life style, outrageous stunts and catchy bubblegum-pop form rich content for someone creative to write about. Today, I will talk about specific, meaningful lines from my poem and what they mean. The first line in the first stanza, talks about the religious parallels of Madonna to Mary, mother of god. She has used this connection in a tong...

John Waters films that I've watched so far: Best to Worst

Hairspray (1988) 'Hairspray' is a sumptuous exercise in feel-good film. Waters' last film before the death of his recurring actor 'Divine.' The light satire in the film pokes fun of society's rejection of people based on race, class and weight by placing confident yet overweight teenager Tracy Turnblad (played by pre-talk show Ricki Lake) into her favourite dance show on television in the early 60's. She begins to notice the prejudice and segregation of black people on this aforementioned show and becomes an advocate for integration. Even though Serial Mom is the more technically impressive movie with a higher budget, Hairspray is more heartwarming and fun to watch. Serial Mom (1994) While 'Serial Mom' differs in tone from Hairspray it is almost equally as good. Kathleen Turner stars as Beverly Suthphin. A middle-class housewife who begins murdering people who don't conform to her specific mode of political correctness.  The dark humour and outra...

Genre Exercise

Image
In my opinion, as a necessity for my craft, I read a lot of screenplays of my most-liked films and deconstruct what I like about them. I am not a massive fan of literature but when I do settle down and read a book I generally go for the same type. My favourite genres of fiction include comedy, musicals and romance. In musical screenplays there are rules that separate this genre from the others. For example, when a character is singing their dialogue is usually written in italics or all-caps to distinguish the singing from talking. Similar to musical plays, it is also crucial to place songs in parts of the film that need emotional elevation and they can be a useful way of revealing crucial elements of characters to the audience without obvious exposition. 'Don't Cry For Me Argentina' from 'Evita' or 'I Know Where I've Been' from 'Hairspray' for example. Comedy is a genre that has a few guidelines, but a lot of the rules can easily be broken if it...

Review of Samyang Hot Chicken Ramen

Image
When one thinks of ramen, a relatively plain, innocuous soup comes to mind. Korean company Samyang would have to disagree as they have changed the game with their increasingly popular 'Hot Chicken Ramen,' better known as 'Korean Fire Noodles.' With one squirt of the pre-packaged chilli sauce on to the noodles, an explosion of flavour enters your mouth. Sweat may pour from your temples but it is well worth it for the delicious taste you experience. Although, I will give a fair warning to anyone who isn't good with hot food. It will be painful to some but also delicious to others. One negative, I might add is that the sauce can be very slurpy and messy to eat. It can stain clothes very badly too, so do not wear white while eating them! For anyone who struggles with spice, I would recommend the milder Carbonara or Blackbean flavours. I feel like the cheese in the Carbonara flavour dilutes the heavy flavor slightly and makes for a slightly milder experience, without sac...
