A Rough Draft of the Visuals + Conclusion

I am checking in to write brief post, reduced in size for the most part due to the project nearly being completed. The post shows a draft of the visuals on my booklet so far and displays the progress of my artistry from blank canvas to a full, media-rich image processed document.  Although, for all intents and purposes, this assignment took a lengthy aggregate of my days, it was well worth the wait, as the task at hand has became a particularly noteworthy vision of beauty and splendor. Looking back on the project, I would have liked to have experimented with more challenging methods of image processing such as more in-depth tools like Photoshop. Canva is a beautiful editing suite but can be occasionally limited. My journey may be reaching a close, yet I will always remember the aesthetic satisfaction that I achieved while creating this passion project of mine. Thank you, Fionn Baker

The Look

Image
One of the final pages of my Neuroadversity show booklet centres around the look of the show. I included pictures of films I have watched that have had an influence over my style such as "Pink Flamingo's", "Trog" and "Heathers". The first film I chose is "Pink Flamingo's", a transgressive John Waters film starring famous drag queen Divine in the starring role as a notorious criminal determined to protect her title as "The Filthiest Person Alive". It is complimented by a delightfully cheap, 1960's look. The second film is "Trog" a campy B horror movie featuring Joan Crawford's final performance in film. I love every second of Crawford's candy coloured pantsuit wardrobe combined with awful special effects and a distinctive pastel aesthetic. Last but not least, the final film I chose "Heathers" is a 1989 black comedy with a hazy, surreal neon look similar to a slasher film, contrasted with the day-...

Characters

For the section where I described the characters of the piece, I made some visual motifs to separate certain clusters of characters from each other. A large Art Deco style zig-zag axes divides the characters from the "Deaf, Dumb and Kind" club and "The Cook Family". This has significance in the story of the potential show as the show centers around the feud between these two clusters. I also added some retro stars to break up the action with some perceptible splendor. I think this worked in my favour as the look of the document is really starting to pop off the page and become something admirable.

The Structure

The next batch of content for my booklet includes the structure of the show and its episodes. The show will be tailored when writing for an hour timeslot, a.k.a. 3 acts. Each of the planned 6 episodes has a stand-alone theme and a goal that is reached by the end but also progresses the longer form story-arc of the season. The longer format of the episodes make it easier to explore and develop the continuous struggles of the characters and their conflicts while also having a lighter B plot to contrast with the main storyline. As an ensemble piece, the show has many contrasting personalities and appearances, some drift in and out of focus throughout the episodes but generally the plot is about the relationships between Grainne, Oscar and their underdog club. "Neuro-adversity" tonally is a black comedy-drama and balances serious commentary with humour but leans more towards the humorous side.

The First Page (Ideas, Decisions)

You know what they say? The first page is always the hardest. Every creative writer has been haunted by many a blank page, besieging us with its purgatory-like glare . I was lucky that I already had some creative juices flowing, some metaphorical Juicy Fruit gum to spit onto the page. I had it in the bag, or so I thought. I began writing a brief introductory pitch into my Canva document. I knew already how I was going to pitch this show as it was an idea that was very well-developed in my head. Just needed to get it down on the page and show it to the world. I complemented this with a few little visual embellishments to spruce up the page as it is an "Image Processing" assignment, after all. I mostly kept the first two pages simple though as the visuals might distract from the very content rich, succinct writing. I used a white page template, typical for a pamphlet, with some retro bubblegum pink cursive font for the heading. The body of the writing is in a plain black font t...

Welcome Back! + Intro to my Image Processing project

Image
So its come to this, another blog post! I know I have been truant for a very long time but my mitching has been chastened by the burgeoning task of 7 more installments for my Image-processing assignment. To make a long story short, I was happy to oblige. For my image-processing assignment I decided to make a show bible/pamphlet for the television programme I am writing called "Neuro-adversity". I began by making a funky 1960's-70's inspired cover for the book. The retro camp style of the booklet is highly indebted to the kitschy style of film director John Waters who I have mentioned on this blog before. I have become obsessed with his "trash" aesthetic and have incorporated a lot of it into my own work. It was also inspired by the artwork for Irish singer Roisin Murphy's latest album " Roisin Machine (check out my favourite song from it here) " which has a slightly classier but equally retro and chic cover. I used the font "Candice" ...

A New Poem (Let's Explore That!)

Image
Madonna by Fionn Baker Mary, the mother of god’s other name Asshole who only cares about cheap fame
The disco, dance, rock music that she can do all. Or the screen in her pungent Michigan drawl, apart from Feb Fifteen’s award show’s big fall
. No one is like her
 No one will beat her
Apart from Lady Gaga, her beats now way more heard.     ⚛》》》》》◆《《《《《⚛ This is an acrostic poem in free verse but a loose 9-12 syllable structure that I completed as a task for Laura.  I decided to write a humorous piece that reflects on the career of Pop singer Madonna, since she is one of my biggest inspirations as a musician and a writer. Her larger than life style, outrageous stunts and catchy bubblegum-pop form rich content for someone creative to write about. Today, I will talk about specific, meaningful lines from my poem and what they mean. The first line in the first stanza, talks about the religious parallels of Madonna to Mary, mother of god. She has used this connection in a tong...
